What Does a Professional Petsitter Do?
getting some information from you over the phone, including the area in which you're located, the kinds of pets you have, the dates you'll need service, and what types of visits you're looking for. We'll also answer any questions you may have. We willl schedule a free Meet and Greet consultation with you (which lasts about 30 to 90 minutes), so you can meet us and we can meet your pets. You'll fill out the necessary paperwork including veterinary info, emergency contacts, and everything we'll need to know to take care of your pets while you're away, and you can show the petsitter the routine you'd like them to follow. The petsitter will also obtain and test keys that will allow access to your home while you're away. Not all petsitters are the same! When looking for a petsitter who will have access to your home, it is important to ask these questions! - Are they INSURED for my protection? If not - you are putting your home and valuables at risk! Your Best Friend Petsitting is insured, and we have optional coverage that is better than bonding to make sure you are protected. - Are they a member of the professional petsitting organizations NAPPS or PUPS? If not, how can they educate themselves on the basics (and more advanced aspects!) of professional petsitting? How will they stay informed of current information and trends that they can pass along to you? What kind of code of ethics do they adhere to? the quality of pet care they can provide? - How long have they been in business? Do they have a professional reputation at stake? - What are their qualifications? The answer I have seen most often to this from non-professinoals is "I love animals." Of course - we all love animals. My 8 year-old nephew loves animals - that doesn't mean I'd leave my precious pets in his hands! You don't need to be a vet to be a pet sitter, but a few years' experience handling dogs and cats on a professional basis is a plus, as well as additional training (through NAPPS) and their own research and reference.
designated in the Meet and Greet consultation, take care of your pets according to the instructions you provided at the Meet and Greet, leave a visit log to let you know how your pet did, and lock your home securely. What Are the Advantages of Hiring a Professional Petsitter? When you hire a professional petsitter, you can rest easy knowing that your pets are in great hands. By caring for your pets in their home environment, you eliminate the stress and anxiety that some pets can experience in unfamiliar surroundings. Some pets (like fish, birds, or some exotics) can't be boarded, so petsitting is the perfect choice to care for them while you're away.
Lots! Dogs, cats, ferrets, chinchillas, rodents, birds, lizards, snakes, arachnids, fish, and more! If you don't see your pet on the list, call to find out if we can care for it.
We serve Hamlin and surrounding areas including Lakeville, Mount Cobb, Lake Ariel, parts of Greentown, Hollisterville, and South Canaan. We do NOT serve Scranton, Greeley, Honesdale, Hawley, Milford, Olyphant, Dunmore, Throop, or Clarks Summit. Note that we determine our service area by the map on our Services page, NOT by post office location, town name, or county. Those areas that fall outside of the red circle on the map on our Services page are subject to a minimum $5.00 out-of-area fee and we can only offer out-of-area petsits on a case-by-case basis. Call to find out if we are able to serve your area!
For a Few Bucks A Day? There's no comparison! Hiring a friend or a neighborhood kid may seem like a great bargain. However, the neighbor's son or daughter may not have appropriate experience or training, or a disaster plan. If they are not insured, how are you protected against loss or theft? They may not know the signs of common pet ailments. If something goes wrong and your pet becomes ill or injured, they may not know what to do, or where to go. And because they don't have a business reputation on the line, watching your pets may not be their top priority. I have personally experienced this myself - Before I knew that professional petsitters existed, I paid a neighbor for 3 days of pet care, and came home to empty food and water dishes. She "just forgot", and gave me my money back. I didn't want the money back - I wanted safe pets! I learned my lesson. (Thankfully my pets were okay, after lots of loving attention and a quick vet check.) While your neighbor or friend is (hopefully) much more reliable, and maybe even cheaper, they simply can't provide the level of service we do, with the security of insurance and a disaster plan in case of emergencies.
Absolutely - our business depends on it! We go only into the areas of your home that YOU designate, and only to care for your pets. We act as we would want someone to act in our own home. Our business would never last if we did not act honestly and ethically at all times. |
