What does a professional pet sitter do?

A professional pet sitter provides loving care for your pets in your home. We start by getting some information from you over the phone, including the area in which you’re located, the kinds of pets you have, the dates you’ll need service, and what types of visits you’re looking for. We’ll also answer any questions you may have. We will schedule a free Meet and Greet consultation with you (which lasts about 30 minutes), so you can meet us and we can meet your pets. You’ll fill out the necessary paperwork including veterinary info, emergency contacts, and everything we’ll need to know to take the best care of your pets while you’re away, and you can show the pet sitter the routine you’d like them to follow. The pet sitter will also obtain and test keys that will allow access to your home while you’re away.

When looking for a pet sitter who will have access to your home, it is important to ask some questions:

  • Are they insured? Insurance is a basic investment a business owner makes in their customers, and helps provide peace of mind. Your Best Friend Pet Sitting is insured through Pet Sitters Associates, LLC.
  • Are they a member of the professional pet sitting organizations NAPPS or PUPS? 
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Are they pet first aid certified?

When you’re gone, the pet sitter will do a basic home security check, enter your house, access only the areas you’ve designated in the Meet and Greet consultation, take great care of your pets according to the instructions you provided at the Meet and Greet, leave a visit log to let you know how your pet did, and lock your home securely.

What Are the Advantages of Hiring a Professional Pet Sitter?

When you hire a professional pet sitter, you can rest easy knowing that your pets are in loving hands. By caring for your pets in their home environment, you eliminate the stress and anxiety that some pets can experience in unfamiliar surroundings. Some pets (like fish, birds, or some exotics) can’t be boarded, so pet sitting is the perfect choice to care for them while you’re away.

Do you board pets in your home?

No, we don’t do boarding in our homes at this time. If you are looking to board a pet, there are many area kennels and veterinary offices who provide boarding services.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are insured through Pet Sitters Associates, LLC. Our clients are worth it!

What kinds of pets do you sit for?

Lots! We focus on cats, ferrets, chinchillas, rodents, birds, lizards, snakes, arachnids, fish, and more. As of Summer 2016 we are no longer able to accept canine clients.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Hamlin, Greentown, Lake Ariel, Newfoundland, and some surrounding areas. Some additional fees may apply if you fall outside of our primary service area.  We are sorry, due to distance, we currently do not serve the following areas: Moscow, Elmhurst, Lakeville, Scranton, Greeley, Tafton, Milford, Olyphant, Jessup, Honesdale, Hawley, Springbrook, Beach Lake, Tobyhanna, Throop, Dunmore, or Clarks Summit.

Will a pet sitter respect my privacy?

Absolutely – our business depends on it! We go only into the areas of your home that you designate, and only to care for your pets. We act as we would want someone to act in our own home. Our business would never last if we did not act honestly and ethically at all times. Check my references – my clients are repeat customers and can tell you first-hand.

 I don’t live in your service area, can you recommend a sitter to me?

There are a few ways to find a sitter in your area:

  •  Go to www.petsitters.org or www.petsits.com and use their locators by zip code
  •  Call your local vet or groomer and ask if they have any recommendations
  •  Your ideal pet sitter should have solid references

I’m interested in starting a pet sitting business. Can you help me?

I sure can! By giving you this advice:  JOIN NAPPS. Even if you paid a business consultant hundreds of dollars for the best advice, you still will not get the value and services available to a new pet sitter that you would get from joining NAPPS, the Nat’l Association of Professional Pet Sitters. They offer free downloadable forms and templates you can use, free resources, free marketing information, all of the tools you need to set up a pet sitting business for long-term success. Not to mention the opportunity to use NAPPSChat, which helps you get answers to your specific questions from pet sitters all across the country. It’s the best way to get all of your questions answered.

If you don’t want to pay the $160 for information and tools to start your business, then my best advice to you is to reconsider starting a pet sitting business. You will find that people are not willing to turn over the keys to their home and the lives of their furry family members to just anyone. These days, pet parents expect – and should receive – top-quality care for their pets.  If you can’t show that you’ve invested in your clients, they will not invest in you. Every business requires startup funds, a business plan, insurance, and equipment, pet sitting is no different. By starting your business off on the right foot, and learning all you can about being a pet sitter from experienced professionals, you will greatly increase your chances of long-term success!
